Two sisters, working from home, making money selling online.
Rachel and Lizzie are two of the sisters from a family of four children. They both mother one child and sell online in their “spare” time.
Their parents encouraged each child to learn and grow and stretch their entrepreneurial wings from an early age. Lizzie remembers selling greeting cards at the age of 8 or 9 to earn free gifts from the rewards catalog. She also remembers selling hand colored bookmarks in the school lunchroom in 5th grade.
All four of the siblings work for themselves in different capacities. Their Dad’s sales ability and businesses “know how”, has been a tremendous asset for each of them.
Lizzie received a BS degree in Home Economics and Christian Education and spent some time working in the Early Childhood field. When her son was born, home became the most important place to be. Lizzie weighs all job opportunities and entrepreneurial ideas against the priority of home educating her son and being available to follow God’s direction for her life.
For 5 years, Lizzie owned a children’s consignment store which she designed and implemented from the ground up. During this time the store became her home away from home and her son tagged along allowing Lizzie to mother her son while operating her business. Operating a brick and mortar business, offered Lizzie a crash course in hiring, firing, payroll, overhead, customer service, pricing, advertising, and being tired! The lessons learned during this time period are valuable for others and she hopes to share what she knows as this site grows. Lizzie has sold online for over 10 years. She sells online at Etsy and eBay where she maintains a positive feedback rating over 2000! (although her eBay business is on a bit of hiatus right now).
People (including Rachel!) began asking her how to sell online and she realized that the process can be overwhelming for a beginner. As she helped people learn how to sell, she realized that her business knowledge and time spent digging up ideas for selling online could bless others and the idea for Selling Sisters was born.
Rachel took what Lizzie taught her about selling on eBay and went to an entirely new level with her knowledge and expertise. Though they live clear across the country from each other, Lizzie and Rachel constantly call one another to share what they’ve learned or bounce ideas off one another.
This site is an extension of their phone chats. You get to come along on the journey and learn what they know!
Rachel is an accomplished musician. She plays the Piano and Violin in addition to teaching piano, voice and music lessons full time. She has been actively selling on eBay at Mortenview’s Gifts and Treasures in her “spare time” for the last 7 years, and maintains a positive feedback rating of nearly 4400! Rachel has also branched out into selling on Amazon, Addoway and Bonanza.
After her daughter was born, Rachel worked as a project manager overseeing internships for students with disabilities at a local hospital by day, taught piano lessons by night and listed items in her eBay store on the weekends for nearly 3 years before deciding to work for herself full time.
She has been eBaying (and teaching piano lessons) “full time” for 4 years and wishes she had made the decision to work for herself a lot sooner. Running her own businesses has been an enjoyable experience, and provides Rachel and her family a flexible schedule where she can still earn a living. Currently, she’s in the process of buying her first home with her eBay earnings.
When she’s not teaching piano lessons or working on her online stores, Rachel enjoys swimming, reading, baking, singing, spending time with family, Starbucks and sleeping in.
