Selling Strategy: List Items Every Day

I don’t know about you, but it seems like my pile of items to be listed on eBay never ends.  Sometimes it gets smaller, but most of the time, it seems to get bigger.  When you list online, it seems that the work is never done.  Job security is what I call it ;)

When I don’t have a lot of time to list everything at once, I like to do the following:

*Take pictures of everything I plan to list that week.

*Get the pictures ready

*Sort them by similar items (Jeans, shoes, DVD’s, etc)

*List 2-3 items per day.

Sometimes, it’s 5-6 items a day, just depending on what I’m listing, and how much time I have to list.

If I have time, I do like to list 15-20 items in an afternoon, but that doesn’t always work.

Life happens, and the point of being self-employed is to enjoy what you’re doing and not have to stress out about it.  If you don’t have time to list large quantities of items in a day, just list a few items every day.  By the end of the week, you’ll have listed a minimum of 21 new items if you list at least 3 items per day.

As you list new items,  different people look at your store.  Someone may be looking for that pair of shoes you just listed and find your store that way.  They may leave your store with something entirely different than what they came to your store for in the first place. That doesn’t matter.  The more you list and the more types of items you have listed, the more you’ll attract people (and most importantly, different people) to your store.

The point is to get people looking at your store.  They can’t find you if you don’t list……and it can’t sell if it’s not listed.

A Watched Pot Never Boils

I hear from a lot of sellers that they list items and get  discouraged when they don’t sell right away…….or when sales are slow.

Let me just tell you out of love that the old saying “A watched pot never boils” is true.

The more you log in and stare at your store, the more you analyze your listings to see how many watchers you have, or what changes you could make that would get an items to sell, the more it’s gonna drive you crazy.

It was a hard lesson for me to learn too my first couple of years on eBay.  I wanted to be one of “those” people that I’d always heard about who makes decent money off of eBay, but I learned quickly that logging in and getting discouraged over my lack of sales was not going to help me in any way become the seller I wanted to be.

The best thing to do when your sales are slow is to hit the thriftstores or yardsales, and get those treasures listed.

Don’t worry that your sales are slow, or that things aren’t selling as quickly as you’d like them to sell.  The point is that they’re there and ready as soon as the right buyer comes along. Your sales might not be as slow as you think they are, but if you’re logging in multiple times a day and staring at your dashboard, it’s not going to help you make more sales.

Listing items is what helps you increase your sales.  The more options that are available in your store, the more likely customers will be to find an item in your store that they just have to have!

So, the next time you log in to eBay and your sales are slow…….grab some items from your “to be listed” pile and get busy!  You’ll be surprised at how fast things sell when you’re busy listing.


How Much Inventory Makes A Good eBay Store?

That’s a question I hear pretty often.  Sometimes people ask me to look at their store to see why they’re not getting very many sales. Often the first thing I notice is that their inventory is fewer than 300 items.

Let me ask you a question.

If you went to a store, let’s say Macy’s, and they had 113 items in the store, what are the odds that you’d find something there you needed, wanted, or just had to have?

For me, the odds would be pretty slim.  I bet they would be for you too.

Stores that sell a lot of inventory, have a lot of inventory in stock.  You can’t sell it if you don’t have it in stock.

The same principles that apply to retail apply to selling online.

I try to keep my store at 900-1000 items.  That way, if I’m out of town for a few days, sick, or just not able to list, I still have plenty of inventory listed.

This summer, I plan to increase my inventory numbers.

Everywhere you go, you need to be thinking “eBay”  not just at yard sales and thrift stores.  Think “eBay” when you’re at Wal-mart, Target, Macy’s, discount stores, sidewalk sales.  Pretty soon, you’ll find that it’s not difficult to find inventory if you open your eyes and look around you.

If you don’t have a lot of money to invest in your eBay business, then literally, look around you.  Look in your closets, your garage, attic, storage sheds, anywhere you have belongings.  Look on Craigslist and Freecycle too… never know what you’re going to find.

I highly doubt that a person can make a full time income by selling on eBay and having 100 items listed in their store.  Not unless they are $1,000.00 items.

My advice to you: If you have fewer than 100 items in your store, set a goal to get to 100 items listed.

If you have at least 100 but not up to 300 items yet, then set a goal and work toward 300.

If you have at least 300 but not 500, set a goal and work toward having 500 items listed in your store.

If you have at least 500, but aren’t close to 1,000 items in your store, then set goals in 100 item increments to get your store up to 1,000 items listed.

I guarantee you that each time you get to the next 100 items listed in your store, you will see your sales increase.  In my opinion, you can never have too many items listed.

5 Ways to Increase Online Sales in March

After posting about increasing your sales in February, I thought I’d start writing a post about increasing  online sales for each month of the year.

The month of March is a great month to make money on eBay. Summer is just around the corner and in many parts of the country and the world, the weather is already warming up.

Here are my top 5 tips for increasing your sales this month:

#1 Offer international shipping.

Now with giving eBay sellers the opportunity to ship 1st Class International packages straight from their computer, international shipping is quick and easy.  They even fill out the customs form for you ;)

Choose what countries you want to ship to, edit your listings in bulk and you’ll gain an even larger selling audience.

#2 Analyze your listings, make sure you have them priced high enough.

Everyone loves a bargain, right?  Not necessarily.  Some people feel that if an item is priced low, that the item is low quality. They may believe that the seller’s quality of service is low. Make sure your items are priced high enough.

It sounds crazy, I know, but ever since I started raising my prices, you’d be shocked at what  items can sell for.

Just one example is the talking “Little Bear”  I had one in my store listed at $14.99 for several months, and it just sat there.  I raised the price to $18.99 and it sold the next day.  When in doubt, get a second opinion on your pricing.

#3 Add the “best offer” option.

If you don’t already offer the “best offer” option to your customers, you may want to add it.  This gives customers the option to haggle back and forth with you.  Beware that you will get some low offers, but you can choose to decline or counteroffer their offer.  You can also set your best offer settings to automatically decline any offers lower than a set price.

#4  Analyze your store categories.

Take a look at your store categories.

Look first at your “other” category.  Is there a way you could move some of those items into different categories?

Next, look to see if your categories are generic.  For instance “shoes” “clothes” “toys” make them more specific like “Gymboree” “Hanna Andersson” “Carebears” that way, if a person comes to your store and looks for one item, they will see your categories and think “Oh, they have Carebears, I’ll take a look to see which ones they have.”

I found that my items sell faster when I have specific categories.

#5 Experiment with selling different items.

Don’t put your eggs all in one basket……think about how you can branch out into a different market of buyers.  If you sell clothes, have you tried selling shoes?  Have you tried selling men’s clothes? Plus size clothes?  Children’s clothes? Athletic clothes?  If your store is a mixture of different things, have you tried selling mugs? Backpacks?

Don’t be shy.  Just because you’ve never sold that kind of item before doesn’t mean you can’t.  It takes a little while to learn about new items, what makes them sell and how to list and ship them the best way, but if you don’t try something new, you’ll get the same results you’ve always had.  Try one or new types of items this month, I think you’ll be surprised what’s out there that can sell on eBay.
