5 Ways To Reduce Shipping Costs~Repost

If you can save a few cents per item you increase your profits and decrease the customer’s cost . With the price of gas and postage being high, who wants to spend more on postage than you need to?

1) Print your own shipping labels.

One of the best ways to reduce your shipping costs (and save time) is to print your shipping labels through paypal shipping. To save even more time, if you haven’t already linked your eBay account to your PayPal account for shipping, go ahead and link them. You can print your shipping labels through eBay and your postage will still be paid for by your PayPal account.

Printing your labels directly through eBay (or PayPal) saves you money because the cost of shipping PRIORITY flat rate boxes and envelopes is less if you print your postage online AND the best part is the delivery confirmation is FREE when you ship items PRIORITY mail via eBay or PayPal shipping. Delivery confirmation on 1st class, parcel post and media mail is significantly less when you print your postage through eBay and PayPal.

This is one of the most basic ways to save money on your shipping costs, but I’m still surprised at the number of sellers out there who don’t take advantage of this savings.

2) Ship soft items in poly mailers.

When I first started selling on eBay, I shipped almost everything in a box or a bubble mailer. Boxes and bubble mailers add weight to your packaging, which means you pay more postage to ship the item. If you haven’t already tried poly mailers, give them a try. They add about 1/10 of an ounce to the weight of your item. You can ship clothing, plush toys, books, and I’ve even shipped some shoes (mostly sandals, kids shoes, anything light) wrapped in bubble wrap in poly mailers.

3) Utilize PRIORITY flat rate shipping boxes and mailers.

One of my favorite things to ship Jeans and bulky sweaters in is the PRIORITY flat rate envelope (the current rate to ship this mailer is $4.75) I don’t even know how much it costs to ship a pair of jeans via PRIORITY mail now days, but the last time I checked, I couldn’t ship them out for under $7.99. I found out that by folding the jeans up and putting them in a poly mailer, pushing out the excess air and then putting the poly mailer in a flat rate PRIORITY envelope, I can ship them out for about half of what it would normally cost me. I’ve never had a pair of jeans not fit in the mailer.

I’ve also used the same method for jean skirts, and heavier sweaters (cashmere can usually ship out via 1st class for less than $4.75, so I ship them in poly mailers.)

4) Utilize USPS.com carrier pickup.

By having your mail carrier pick up your outgoing packages from home, it saves you both time (driving to the post office, standing in line) and money (gas, mileage) my motto is “work smarter, not harder” don’t make selling online any more difficult than it needs to be.

5) Know what “class” to send your packages.

Mailing a 10 ounce item via PRIORITY mail is going to cost you a lot more than sending it 1st class. Items being shipped within the USA that weigh 13.0 ounces or less can ship out 1st class.

13.1 ounces or higher, usually PRIORITY will be the least expensive option. (Also, when you ship via PRIORITY mail, be familiar with the rates for the flat rate boxes and mailers, sometimes it’s less expensive to use a USPS flat rate box or mailer than it is to use your own box or polymailer and ship the item PRIORITY mail.)

Books, CD’s, DVD’s etc that are under 5 ounces are usually less expensive to ship when you use 1st class shipping.

Depending on where you live and where your item is being shipped to it will vary, but I typically find that media mail items over 6 ounces are less expensive to ship via Media Mail than they are to ship 1st Class.

Lesson Learned?

I sold a vintage Caboodle–like these Rachel says to look for.

Actually, I’ve sold the exact same Caboodle 3 times. It has yet to be paid for!

After I sold it twice, Rachel told me to list it with immediate payment. I just hit the relist button without taking time to edit the listing.

It sold again! Woo hoo–surely third time is the charm right?

NOPE! This baby was purchased by 3 different buyers and not one of them paid.

GRRRR~

The lesson learned? LISTEN TO RACHEL!

Here’s a fabulous brand to sell on eBay:  Peruvian Connection.

Every time I have an item from this brand, it sells right away.  This skirt sold for $40 within 24 hours of listing it!

This Week on eBay

This past week was our Spring break, which was a lot of fun!  I listed  over 50 items in my eBay store this week and spent some time playing around with my Bonanza booth too.  I’m trying to spend just a little bit of time on it each day to increase exposure in my booth.

I did well with auctions in the month of March on eBay. My main goal is to get rid of inventory that’s been hanging around when I auction things, not necessarily to make big bucks, but I did notice an increase in my income from the auctions.

We’re still preparing for our yard sale, so I actually haven’t been out to do some thrifting in several weeks, because I keep finding great items around the house to list– one of my favorite ways to make money anyway :) !

Taxes are filed……..whew……I can breathe a sigh of relief.  I’m hoping to make enough at our yard sale to cover the taxes. That’s my goal anyway ;)

Nothing too exciting going on in the world of sales, they’re staying consistent, which is always my goal, so I’m a very happy seller at the moment :D

Simple Steps To Increase Your Sales on Bonanza

About a year ago, I set up a booth on Bonanza.com.

I import my eBay items to it almost every week so the new items that I listed will be added and the items that have sold on eBay will be deleted.

In the last year, I have sold exactly 24 items on bonanza. An average of 2 items per month
I’m grateful for these sales, the lower final value fees on this site, and the fact that there’s no listing fees. I can’t help but feel that I have the potential to make more sales on this site, especially since I have an average over 900 items on any given day.
I’ve been trying to figure out what to do to get more sales on this site. I’ve been told to “play” with the site a little bit.
So, I started adding favorite sellers and favorite items. I’ve also been making “Hand Picked Lists” of items. This increased my traffic a little bit. After creating my first hand picked list, I sold an item on the site the next day, so I thought I’d try to make more lists and play with the site a little more.
In the mean time, I got an email from Twitter telling me that they missed me……apparently I hadn’t logged in there in awhile, so when I had a few minutes later that week, I logged in. I saw several tweets from my friend Brieanna of items for sale on bonanza. I asked her if she tweets everything that she lists on Bonanza.
She said that some of them are her listings, but that people also pay her to tweet for them. Hmmm………I wasn’t sure how that would work, so I thought about it for awhile and then talked to her again.
She said that she would stop by my Bonanza booth and tweet a few of my listings so I could see how what it did for  my site views.
She tweeted six items for me that weekend. When I logged in on Monday, I could see that my views were much higher for the tweeted items. Exposure was up, but no sales.
Oh well, it didn’t hurt anything to try, right?
The next morning, I woke up to find a $117 sale purchased and paid for on Bonanza!!!! Someone had stopped by and purchased four items.
I was HOOKED!!!
I logged in and favorited some more items. I made another hand picked list and tweeted a few of my items on my own Twitter account. I emailed Brieanna  and asked her if she had any room in her schedule to tweet for me.
The next afternoon………..another Bonanza sale!!!!
I’ve made more money on Bonanza this week, than I’ve made in the last six months. I didn’t spend an extra cent on new inventory, just spent a little bit of time promoting my current items.
In my conversation with Brienna, I found out that tweeting your Bonanza inventory is essential because sites like eBay send your listings to Google for you, so while you can promote your eBay listings yourself, promoting your items from sites that don’t do as much promotion for you is where you should spend more of your effort. Also, the fees are lower on Bonanza, so you might as well encourage buyers to buy from you there :)
I’ve learned a lot about using Bonanza and Twitter successfully from Brienna, she’s been a HUGE help.
I purchased Twitter advertising from her the next day.  I chose  for her to tweet 5 of my Bonanza items on her Twitter account for a week.
The cost is extremely affordable. She has over 44,000 followers on Twitter (whew………) and a lot of her tweets get re-tweeted. While she can’t guarantee that you will get sales from  tweeting your Bonanza items, she can promise that your links will be exposed to her enormous Twitter audience.
Not only does she know what she’s doing on Twitter, she also knows what she’s doing on Bonanza, Brieanna has a Bonanza.com badge in her booth for her 500th bonanza sale (that’s right, 500 sales!)
I’ll keep you posted on what happens from this week’s Twitter exposure of my Bonanza items…….finger’s crossed……..I’m optimistic that it’s going to be a GREAT week!
